Science New Zealand Awards

The Science New Zealand Awards are an annual event celebrating the outstanding contributions of scientists across Aotearoa New Zealand. They recognise research that benefits the nation, showcasing innovation, collaboration, and excellence

The awards have five main categories:

  1. Collaboration for Impact: Honours research teams that have successfully partnered with communities, businesses, iwi, and government entities to address significant challenges and create tangible outcomes.
  2. Success in Innovation/Commercialisation: Recognises researchers who have translated their scientific discoveries into innovative products or services with commercial success.
  3. Individual/Lifetime Achievement: Celebrates individuals who have demonstrated sustained excellence and leadership in their scientific careers.
  4. Early Career Researcher: Acknowledges emerging scientists who have made significant contributions early in their research careers.
  5. Te Tohu Tūhura: Awarded to initiatives that exemplify impactful partnerships with Māori, fostering mutual benefit and understanding.

The event culminates in the presentation of the Supreme Award, which honours the most outstanding achievement among the year's awardees.

The Science New Zealand Awards not only celebrate scientific excellence but also underscore the importance of research in addressing national challenges and enhancing the well-being of all New Zealanders.

The Science New Zealand Awards are open only to researchers or projects working for or with Public Research Organisations (PROs). Each PRO nominates projects or individuals through its own internal selection process.
