Reducing textile waste to save the planet

Every year, an estimated 100,000 tonnes of re-useable fibre ends up in New Zealand landfills, releasing greenhouse gases that can damage the environment.

Science has delivered a high-value solution to the global textile challenge.

Science has delivered a high-value solution to the global textile challenge.

Scientists have developed solvent-free technology – demonstrated in roading and construction applications – that changes how fibres are recycled and reused, delivering a practical, high-value solution to address the global textile challenge.

UsedFULLY holds exclusive rights to the technology and has scaled to small commercial production in Auckland. It is turning post-commercial textile waste into a growing range of high-value industrial products, including roading and pavement additives, adhesives and composites. In roading applications, these fibre-based additives can reduce bitumen use by up to 15 percent.

UsedFULLY has also been accepted into the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in the Netherlands, an innovation hub that specialises in taking cleantech companies to full industrial scale. This will accelerate the deployment of the technology, connecting New Zealand innovation with international partners, investors and global markets.
